The Week's Winners & Losers

Baby Bumps

A 25-year-old Georgia woman was arrested at the Peace Bridge on March 3 and charged with possession of 34,000 ecstasy pills—street value $3 million—concealed within a false pregnancy body suit. Still, gotta give an “A” for effort to one of the more brazen smuggling attempts in recent history.

Riding The Fence

During her performance at HSBC Arena on March 4, Lady GaGa implored her fans to contact the undecided Republican State Senator Mark Grisanti and voice their support of marriage equality. When an international pop superstar calls you out like that, it might be time to take a position on the issue.

Murphy's Law

Already beset by months of delays due to flooding, officials on March 7 confirmed that construction of the $137 million new Buffalo federal courthouse is facing another setback—a culprit the city is already well acquainted with: mold. At this point, I think it’s fair to assume this thing will never get finished.

Population Growth

2010 estimated census figures released on March 7 revealed that Erie County’s population has dropped another 4.6 percent since 2000, falling to roughly 906,000, the largest county to lose population. All 34 of the counties that lost population in New York were upstate. Last one to leave, turn out the light.

Matters of Formality

Gov. Andrew Cuomo officially set a date of May 24 for the special election to fill the congressional seat left vacant by tranny-chaser Chris Lee. Let’s see, that makes it only 76 days until the inevitable election of another wealthy, conservative cog in the well oiled machine of Congress.

By the numbers...

Minimum number of years Muzzammil Hassan will spend in prison—with a maximum of life—after being sentenced in Erie County Court on March 9 for the brutal beheading of his wife in 2009. Taking into account the two years already served during the trial, Hassan will first be up for parole in 2034.

The highest New York state income tax bracket unless officials pass an extension of the so-called “millionaires tax.” The current surcharge—which tops out at 8.97 percent—effects individuals who earn $200,000 or more and is set to expire in 2012. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has pledged not to raise taxes this year, but Democratic Assemblymen have lobbyed to extend the surcharge and raise its’ floor to $500,000. Roughly $5 billion in annual revenues are generated by the current tax.

Percentage of homes in Nevada that carry negative equity (commonly referred to as “underwater” mortgages) according to a research study by the real estate data service CoreLogic. Almost five of every 100 homes in the Buffalo/Niagara region were underwater, one of the lowest rates nationwide and lower than any individual state. Nationally, 23 percent of borrowers owe more than their homes are worth.
