Over The Pub

Tom Dudzick’s beloved Over the Tavern, the story of a Polish family in 1959 Buffalo, played successfully all over the United States after its record-making debut at Studio Arena Theatre with Jeanne Cairns as Sister Clarissa in 1994. Now, an adaptation of the script called Over the Pub that transplants the story to Ireland has become the most successful play ever staged by Cork Arts Theatre.

“Set in Cork in 1963, this hilarious adaptation gives us Pat and Ellen Murphy who live above their pub with their four children, aged 12 to 16. Each offspring is hell-bent, or at least Purgatory-bent, on making mischief. Toss in a septuagenarian nun who’s devilish with a ruler, everyone’s concerns about faith and sex and family relations, and it’s a hilarious feast.”

As at Studio Arena, the popularity of the piece in Cork has inspired return engagements. Now, O’Connell & Company gives Western New York an opportunity to enjoy the Irish version of Dudzick’s play, as conceived by Dolores Mannion. Directed by Sheila McCarthy, Over the Pub stars Gregory Gjurich, Mary Coppola Gjurich, Tess Spangler, Alex Race, Erin L. Brignone, Sean Patrick Ryan, and Tomas Leonardo Wasz. The production opens on Saint Patrick’s Day and runs through April 10 at Erie Community College, North Campus (6205 Main Street, Williamsville). Call 848-0800 for details.
