The Week's Winners & Losers

Online Popularity

Finally, a negative ranking on one of those stupid city lists which we can wear with pride. Men’s Health recently released a ranking of the 100 “most Socially Networked cities,” placing Buffalo down at #72. We’ll take that as a welcome sign Buffalonians actually have real world friends.

Wireless Security

Federal officials apologized to an innocent Buffalo man on March 18 whose West Side home was mistakenly stormed by armed agents in a predawn raid for child porn—an apology I’m sure had nothing to do with the negative media attention that followed. Moral of the story: Password your network, folks.

Ultimatums

Humbled by the prospect of (yet another) downtown vacancy, the Common Council voted unanimously on March 22 to give banking overlord HSBC another extension to decide if they will leave their eponymous skyscraper downtown. C’mon Buffalo, man up and put an end to this protracted tease.

Upstate Secession

Two Rochester lawmakers introduced symbolic bills on March 22 that would allow counties to hold referenda on the division of New York into two states. While not the first time this has been raised, it proves again, given our reliance on downstate welfare, how little bearing facts have on politics.

Merciful Deaths

Williamsville animal lovers at a March 22 Preservation Board meeting voiced their concerns over a historic-looking iron fence that has impaled several deer attempting to leap over. Residents argued it was much more humane for a deer to careen through your windshield at 50 mph.

By the numbers...

59

Number of employees temporarily laid off at the General Motors Tonawanda Engine Plant on March 21 due to a shortage of parts manufactured in Japan—an illustration of the global nature of modern industry. The Japanese economy has been at a relative standstill stemming from the devastation suffered from the massive earthquake and tsunami in Sendai.

42

Non-fatal heroin overdoses reported at Erie County Medical Center in the month of January alone. Buffalo Police Commissioner Dan Derenda issued a warning on March 21 that the number of overdoses has increased over the past few months and that this may be attributed a bad batch of smack, possibly laced with harmful cutting agents. Officials currently suspect two deaths—and possibly a third—may be related to the bad H floating around.

170,142

Dollars paid to private law firms by the Buffalo Economic Renaissance Corporation in the first 10 months of 2010, as the agency prepared to disband, according to documents obtained from BERC under FOIL late last year. The bulk of the legal fees went to the firm Hurwitz & Fine ($103,500), followed by Harris Beach ($61,886).

What are deer doing in the heart of Williamsvile anyway? Seems like a kind of large pest that ought to be eliminated maybe they ought put up more spiked fences.

So $170,000 on attorneys that have contributed to Mayor tard's fund plus $300,000 to an organization to manage the outstanding loans (several of which are people tight with the Mayor so they dont have to pay back their loans). Almost a half of a million $ that should be out on the street assisitng legitimate businesses. Nice work

I think Hatrris Beach is the favorite law firm of the county executive. Is there a reason why Brown would use Collins' law firm? Maybe it has something to do with Byron Brown not having a Republican mayoral challenger in the last election. Can one say payback?

Hmmmm... does artvoice realize how offensive their use of a certain flag to talk about a local NY problem might play to the public? Remember in "any" form or use it is not considered okay.

Would have been all over the Buffalo News for such a obvious politically incorrect symbol.

Shame shame shame on you.
