The Bridge Over the River Why?

Perhaps 30 people attended a panel discussion on the Peace Bridge expansion project Tuesday night in the Buffalo offices of Cornell University School of Industry and Labor Relations. It’s a pity there weren’t more: The conversations held there, on the 12th floor of 237 Main Street, often organized with the Partnership for the Public Good, are uniformly civil and informative. And the conference room affords a beautiful view of downtown Buffalo and Lake Erie.

Follow That Story

On Wednesday, the Buffalo News picked up on a story we reported last week about the clubbing and pepper-spraying of activist Nate Buckley by NFTA cops during an April 8 peace rally in downtown Buffalo. Reporter Mark Sommer’s account adds significant detail and depth to the story, including the news that the officer who pepper-sprayed Buckley, Adam Brodsky, roughed up a 64-year-old bicyclist last summer for using a train station restroom.

Dividing Lines

A couple weeks ago, we noted that Dennis Ward, the Democratic commissioner on the Erie County Board of Elections and a member of the Erie County Legislature’s Advisory Commission on Reapportionment, had roughed out a number of maps illustrating scenarios in which the legislature could be reduced from 15 seats to 11 and conform to the new Census numbers without dividing towns that are equal to or smaller than the most populous possible district. State law prohibits dividing towns that fit that description, although that mandate has frequently been ignored in past reapportionments.

Corwin, In Brief

Celeste Katz at the New York Daily News published this lovely item on her blog Wednesday: Apparently someone has created a false Twitter account for Assemblywoman Jane Corwin, the Republican and Conservative candidate for the vacant 26th District Congressional seat.
