DETOUR (1945)—A gritty Poverty Row masterpiece directed by Edgar G. Ulmer with minimal resources. Tom Neal plays a hitchhiking pianist who becomes implicated in two murders when he makes the mistake of accepting a ride from Ann Savage as the screen’s most memorable harridan. With existential dialogue, striking camera angles and dashes of Chopin, it was a major influence on the French nouvelle vague directors. Fri 9:15 pm.
