Been to a Nursing Home Lately?

by Michael I. Niman

With Republicans in the Senate and Congress almost unanimous about wanting to terminate Medicare and Medicaid, I think it’s time we all pay a visit to a nursing home and see the greedy senior citizens whose stubborn longevity threatens the very idea of a luxury tax break on yachts and second homes.

News Analysis

Gotham Not Goths

by Bruce Fisher

It’s a jarring experience to walk into the spacious, sunlit Greek and Roman section of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and to see, in the very entrance of the whole classical collection, the Roman bronze called Artemis and the Stag, which for decades was Buffalo’s own.

Creedence Clearwater Revisited

Driven by newer and older generations alike, Creedence Clearwater Revisited performs authentic hits full of jamming guitar solos, thumping bass, and crashing drums that will cause you to flashback to the 1960s. This week AV interviewed drummer Doug Clifford, one of the two original members of CCR, about his experiences performing in front of four generations of fans.

Red Carpet Secrets

by Jimmy Janowski

Am I the only person who watches those red carpet shows preceding every damn award program? OSCARS! EMMYS! GOLDEN GLOBES! THE HEISMAN TROPHY! (I don’t know if that last one has a red carpet show, because all my ESPN channels are blocked. And by the way, I don’t think I should have to pay for Time Warner!)

My Daughter! O My Ducats!

by Anthony Chase

The Merchant of Venice opens at Shakespeare in Delaware Park this weekend. Saul Elkin has twice before played Shylock, the Jewish money lender who unsuccessfully seeks to avenge himself on his anti-Semitic enemy, Antonio. Elkin recognizes that this is a great role, but the actor and founder of Buffalo’s long-running Shakespeare festival nonetheless revisits the play with trepidation.

Stagefright

by Javier

TV and stage star Neil Patrick Harris (pictured above) did a fabulous job of hosting the Tony awards this past Sunday. Harris sang a hilarious opening number and closed the event with a rap number written (during the show) by In the Heights composer Lin-Manuel Miranda. Harris played Bobby in the New York Philharmonic concert production of Sondheim’s Company last April.

Bryan Ball - President, Stonewall Democrats of WNY

Two civil rights issues of interest to millions of New Yorkers—the Marriage Equality Act and the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA)—are before the state legislature right now. We asked the president of one of the area’s most influential LGBTQ advocacy groups to explain why these laws are important, and why he’s been invited to the White House.

News of the Weird

A 53-year-old man with failing eyesight and who had recently undergone intestinal surgery told Sonoma, Calif., police that on Sunday afternoon, May 1, a woman had come to his home and instructed him to drop his pants and get face-down on the bed so that she could administer an enema. He said he assumed his doctor had sent her and thus complied, and it was over in two minutes, and she was gone. The doctor later said he had no idea who the woman was.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): In Mark Harris’s novel Bang the Drum Slowly, professional baseball players cheat their fans out of money by engaging them in a card game called TEGWAR, which is an acronym for The Exciting Game Without Any Rules.

Ask Anyone

I’m getting so sick and tired of hearing about men cheating! I constantly hear about men cheating on their spouses and girlfriends all of time… not just in the media but in the town I live in. All of the hype about male infidelity is starting to make me feel like I cannot trust men when I’m in relationships with them.
