Gallery District: Albright-Knox and The Burchfield Penney

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery celebrates its 150th anniversary this year with three exhibits exploring different aspects of how the gallery got to be the world-class art facility it has developed into during that time. The three historical perspective exhibits will run from November to next March. More immediately on the agenda are two photographic exhibits and one multimedia exhibit. These latter three shows open October 21 and run into January.

Around Town: The Small Gallery Season

Upcoming at CEPA are three interrelated exhibits in conjunction with the National Trust for Historic Preservation conference to be held in Buffalo this year from October 19 to 22, and a re-presentation of a powerful and beautiful CEPA-sponsored artwork and installation first presented ten years ago, on the one-year anniversary of 9/11.

Back to School: Art in the Colleges and Universities

Intersecting Currents, a show of works by students and faculty members of the South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, China, opens at Daemen College September 9, running through September 30. The exhibit is related to an ongoing cultural exchange program between Daemen and SCUT. A contingent of Chinese art and graphic design students from SCUT has been attending Daemen since the fall of last year.

Art on the Move: A Quartet of Gerald Mead Collection Exhibitions

If you missed the major Public/Private exhibition at the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University that closed in mid-August, artwork from the Gerald Mead Collection, organized under various themes, will be on view at four venues in and around Buffalo this Fall. Here’s a rundown:

The thing about Labor Day weekend is one is never sure when it really ends. A lot of our fall art venues hedged their bets and are opening on September 9, completely skewing the First Friday Allentown Gallery Walk percentages as far as expected attendance. There are no less than six art openings on the second Thursday or Friday of September, including the eagerly awaited Contemporary Chinese art exhibition at Daemen College; the University of Buffalo’s new Department of Visual Studies PhD program faculty show, Visual Epistemologies, at the UB Anderson Gallery; the MFA alumni show titled Horsplay; and Buffalo Beijing Translation, a collaborative exhibition with the Central Academy of Fine Arts Beijing; as well as curator Gerald Mead’s exhibit of women artists in Western New York at Nichols, and the three-person exhibition opening at Buffalo Art Space, In Suspect Terrain.
