Judge Not, David Manz, Lest Ye Be Unjudged

Apart from the nail-biter in Lackawanna, Tuesday’s primaries yielded but one surprise: An incumbent city court judge, David Manz, lost his bids for the Democratic and Working Families Party lines in November’s general election.

Too Much Monkey Business

On Friday, September 9, the Institute for the Study of Human-Animal Relations (ISHAR) at Canisius College held a presentation featuring Dr. James Ha, head of the primate breeding program at the Washington National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) at the University of Washington. The talk, entitled “The Use of Primates in Biomedical Research: A Personal Perspective,” was given by Dr. Ha at the invitation of Dr. Michael Noonan, professor of biology at Canisius.

UB Financial Aid Delayed

The first few weeks of classes can be challenging and frustrating for students. Classrooms are difficult to find, parking spaces are all taken, and books don’t read themselves. This fall, University at Buffalo students are experiencing another challenge: Their financial aid checks, which include grants, scholarships, and government loans, have been delayed by the school until the third week of the semester.

The Vanishing of the Bees

This Saturday, September 17 at noon, there will be ascreening of The Vanishing of the Bees, a 90-minute documentary about colony collapse disorder, a disease affecting commercial honeybees. CCD, as it is known, has swept across the planet and has resulted in the death and destruction of up to 80 percent of commercial honeybee colonies. According to the USDA, the US has been hard hit. These pollinators service 90 percent of our plant-based food crops, and the services are worth approximately $15 billion annually.
