Savage Humor

by Kip Doyle

It’s possible that Mick Foley would be known only as the most brutalized pro wrestler ever had he not let his personality pop through somewhere along the way.

Getting a Grip

The War on Occupy

by Michael I. Niman

First it was ignored by the media. Then it was brutally attacked by the police, ridiculed by the press, and embraced by an outraged and tormented public. Then, for a moment, we had a short romance—a minute when it was acceptable to take the 99 percent seriously.

Frack-U

by Geoff Kelly

The prospect of deep-well, high-pressure, slick-water, horizontal hydrofracturing, or fracking, in New York’s Marcellus and Utican Shale formations has mobilized activists of all stripes.

The Globalization of Protest

by Joseph E. Stigutz

The protest movement that began in Tunisia in January, subsequently spreading to Egypt, and then to Spain, has now become global, with the protests engulfing Wall Street and cities across America. Globalization and modern technology now enables social movements to transcend borders as rapidly as ideas can.

Theater Week

Crista Moore in The Addams Family

by Anthony Chase

I’m more than eager to see The Addams Family when it opens at Shea’s next week. For one, I’m looking forward to seeing the major changes that have been made to improve the show for the national tour: new songs in, old songs out, greater focus on Gomez and Morticia, dopey squid climax gone. As much as that, however, it will be a treat to see Crista Moore again.

For many people, seeing Peter Pan, the story of the boy who never grew up, has been the start of a lifelong love of the theater.

Classical Music Notes

A Classical Music Christmas

by Jan Jezioro

While the classical Christmas music scene in Western New York has already gotten off to a strong start this past weekend, with the Neglia Ballet’s spectacular, collaborative production with the BPO of The Nutcracker at Shea’s and Nickel City Opera’s charming Amahl and the Night Visitors at the Riviera, there are many more events to come.

Film Review

Answers to Nothing

by M. Faust

I like to call them mosaic films, given that no one else seems to have come up with a name for the genre yet—movies that throw a large number of characters at us without focusing on any one of them, revealing over time how they are related both literally and thematically.

If you’re keeping score, what you’re looking at here is the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle. It’s the newest Beetle, but not to be confused with the New Beetle, which is what VW called the car from its introduction for the 1998 model year through to the 2011 models.

Was Moammar Gadhafi the last of the “buffoon dictators,” asked BBC News in October. His legend was earned not merely with his now-famous, dirty-old-man scrapbook of Condoleezza Rice photos. Wrote a BBC reporter, “One day (Gadhafi) was a Motown (backup) vocalist with wet-look permed hair and tight pants. The next, a white-suited comic-operetta Latin American admiral, dripping with braid.”

A friend of mine opened a little shop a few years ago. She really enjoyed being an independent businesswoman, but she wasn’t very good at it, and the shop just closed. My problem is that when she opened the store, I let her borrow some framed artwork to hang on the walls.
