Editor's Pick: Best Used Record Store - Antique Man

It’s hard to go into a used record store in search of a specific record. Used record shopping is more about discovery—about finding something you didn’t know existed. After Gil Scott-Heron died last year, however, I went on a search for his records at several stores in Buffalo. Nobody had anything…except the Antique Man (234 Allen Street) in Allentown. I walked into the store and asked the owner if he had any records by the dearly departed Heron. He thought for a moment and said that he had remembered that something came in a few weeks ago. He showed me over to the jazz section and we searched but found nothing. I thanked him for his help and rooted through one more bin that was hiding under a shelf in the corner. And then it happened; discovery! There, in the unsorted bin, a copy of Heron’s 1981 album, Reflections. Mission accomplished, thanks to the Antique Man.

Editor's Pick: Best Used Book Store - Rust Belt Books

Just like searching for used records, used book shopping is about discovering something new. There are a handful of good used bookstores in Buffalo—Old Editions (74 East Huron Street), The Second Reader (1419 Hertel Avenue)— but my favorite is Rust Belt Books (202 Allen Street) in Allentown. When I walk into that store I usually go straight for the front table where all of the newly arrived books sit. The books on that table are usually unsorted but that’s a good thing because it has led to some strange and interesting discoveries; like a rambling novel by Andy Warhol or a book on the origins of LSD by Humphry Osmond, the man who invented the word “psychedelic,” or an old copy of A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. These are just some of the gems I’ve walked out of Rust Belt Books with, but new treasures always replace them each time I stop in.

Editor's Pick: Best Liquor Store for a Late Night Run - Danahy’s

It’s good to know where you can get a bottle of liquor or a decent bottle of wine in a pinch. Most liquor stores in the Elmwood Village close at around 10pm but Danahy’s, on the corner of Bird and Elmwood avenues, is open until midnight every day. They’ve got an impressive selection of wine, which is lucky because when everything else around is closed, beggars can’t be choosers.
