Take some time this summer to get in touch with your Inner Harbor. And while you’re at it, your Outer Harbor as well. And no better way to do both than by walking or biking the Industrial Heritage Trail along the Buffalo River (Inner Harbor) and/or Lake Erie waterfront (Outer Harbor).

The strenuous work of the lone gardener is formidable. Seemingly benign to the outsider’s eye, residential horticulture includes a list of back-breaking activities including hoisting unwieldy bags of mulch and scratching out weeds for hours on end crouched in the hot sun, knees locked in painful cramps while sweat-crowned straw hats flop lopsided as yarrow after rain.

With warm weather upon us, the last thing you likely want is to heat your kitchen. A cold soup is a perfect recipe for this; cold soups are delicious, refreshing, and nutritious. Some cold soups do require cooking, but others can be prepared without even a glance at the stove.

The Mapquest route from downtown New Orleans to Chalmette Battlefield leads through the lower Ninth Ward, where the dikes failed, and the Federal Emergency Management Administration failed, and Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath is still, seven years later, the dominant historical event written into the landscape.

America likes to think of itself as a land of opportunity, and others view it in much the same light. But, while we can all think of examples of Americans who rose to the top on their own, what really matters are the statistics: To what extent do an individual’s life chances depend on the income and education of his or her parents?

Love, Loss, and What I Wore! What a blatant plug for the delightfully funny show at Buffalo United Artist Theater…too bad it closed last week, because like the ladies in that play, I have delineated highlights of my life with what I wore. And certainly for an actor in Buffalo, the Artie Awards are a highlight.

Now in its 19th season, the Roycroft Chamber Music Festival has long become a favorite June tradition among the many chamber music lovers in Western New York. Former Buffalo Philharmonic violinist Nancy McFarland Gaub and her husband pianist Eugene Gaub, Juilliard School of Music graduates and former residents of East Aurora, founded the festival back in 1994, but soon afterwards moved to Iowa where they are on the faculty of Grinnell College.

No-hitters are always special; on average, three such games occur in the Major Leagues every year. Yet last Friday, as the New York Mets and ace pitcher Johan Santana were marching toward the late innings of their game against the St. Louis Cardinals, word was spreading fast across Buffalo.

I remained unsure whether or not I should review the most recent novel by Toni Morrison (Song of Solomon, Beloved) up until the moment I started writing this sentence. My concerns were many, not the least of which being the embarrassing fact that I had never read a single work by Morrison until I read this book.

No insect is in greater need of a public relations boost than the cockroach, and Dr. Mathieu Lihoreau of Rennes, France, provided it in a recent issue of the journal Insectes Sociaux. Roaches are highly social, suffer when isolated, recognize members of their own families, and appear to make “collective decisions for the greater good” of their community, according to a review of the research in May by BBC Nature.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): The pain you will feel in the coming week will be in direct proportion to the love you suppress and withhold. So if you let your love flow as freely as a mountain spring in a rainstorm, you may not have to deal with any pain at all. What’s that you say?

My 15-year-old daughter is obsessed with Glamour, Allure, and other glitzy fashion magazines that celebrate the fashion industry, which I happen to think is disastrous to women. Any ideas how to wean her off that oppressive garbage? And please don’t tell me “Just talk to her.” She’s 15.
