On "Grisanti Receives Praise and Condemnation for Earth Day"

A recent article and subsequent letter criticizing Senator Grisanti are perplexing, given the Senator’s strong environmental record during his short time in office. As someone who has followed the fracking issue in New York State over the last couple years, a closer look shows that the legislation introduced by Senator Grisanti provides significant protections for New Yorkers. Whether or not high volume hydraulic fracturing moves forward in New York, our state is already dealing with waste from fracking in other states, including Pennsylvania. Among other things, Senator Grisanti’s legislation ensures that this waste will no longer be sent to our sewage treatment plants, which are not designed to handle this dangerous waste. His legislation also prohibits using fracking waste from being used to de-ice our roads. That’s right; the chemical laden and radioactive fracking waste is used to de-ice roads! While New York State continues to deliberate on whether or not it will allow fracking, we should all support efforts to tackle real problems associated with fracking that are a threat to public health in New York.
