Members exhibit and magazine launch at 464 Gallery

Spark!

464 Gallery has made a mission of providing art directly to the public since its opening in February 2009. Since then, the gallery has hosted more than 160 art events and has worked with hundreds of local artists. The gallery provides a unique and welcoming space for local and emerging artists, musicians, and authors, as well as an approachable gallery for Buffalonians to visit and get involved with. Owner Marcus Wise has said, “It is 464 Gallery’s goal to continue making art accessible and approachable not only to the public but to new artists as well.”

To further demonstrate their dedication to this goal, 464 Gallery has created Spark, a new quarterly local arts magazine. Spark is an ad-free graphic publication that features in-depth stories on the artwork and lives of 464 Gallery members and other emerging artists written by local creative writers. The inaugural issue will feature Max Collins interviewed by Michelle Wlosinski, Paul Klonowski interviewed by Sarah Maurer (who also served as copy-editor), Chuck Tingley interviewed by Susan Daniels, Thomas Webb interviewed by Cori Wolff, Cleveland emerging artist Mark Yasenchack interviewed by Thom Neill, and more. Future issues will include similar interviews with emerging artists from other cities to create parallels with artists in other communities.

"Return" by Mark Yasenchack

“Every day I work with talented artists who have never, or rarely, been given outlet,” Wise said. “These feature stories are meant to be inspiration for other emerging artists who have yet to break the surface. Their stories deserve to be told, their work shown, and Spark magazine is going to serve as that vehicle.”

In addition to the launch of Spark magazine, 464 Gallery will celebrate its thriving community of members with its fourth annual members exhibition. The exhibit will present artwork by members Susie Kelly Flatau, Sean Madden, and many more; while Max Collins, Chuck Tingley, CHOW Art (Buffalo-born and internationally known wheatpaste artist), and guest street artist Burn 353 from St. Louis will create a live mural on the garage out back as viewers look on.

The Spark Members Exhibit will be on view at 464 Gallery (464 Amherst Street) through August 19. The exhibit opens alongside the Spark magazine launch party on Friday, August 3, 6-11pm. All of the artists and authors featured in Spark will be present to greet guests and discuss their work, complimentary refreshments will be served, Lloyd Taco Truck will provide food, there will be music, outdoor seating, and performance art. Join 464 Gallery for this event that is sure to go down in the gallery’s already significant history.
