Better Off Than in 2008?

by Bruce Fisher

The Dow Jones Industrial Average stock market index is up over 12,000 points, compared to 2008 when it fell to 8,000. Real, inflation-adjusted gross domestic product is up, even here in the slow-growth Buffalo-Niagara metropolitan area, where the 2008 number was $42 billion but the 2012 number is over $45 billion.

Getting a Grip

Robots of Mayberry

by Michael I. Niman

Mayberry is the mythical all-white North Carolina town that writers conjured up for the early 1960s TV sitcom, The Andy Griffith Show. In our modern lexicon, it personifies the nostalgic vision of an “innocent” America before the civil rights era, the Vietnam War, hippies, Watergate, global warming, and, most of all, a black president.

Who Built What?

by J. Bradford DeLong

When the French politician and moral philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville published the first volume of his Democracy in America in 1835, he did so because he thought that France was in big trouble and could learn much from America. So one can only wonder what he would have made of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida.

The Tony Awards!

by Geoff Kelly

Two thirds into 2012, the year’s identity has been entirely subsumed: Hereafter, 2012, thy name is Anthony Chase. It has been a year of honors for Artvoice’s founding theater editor: The National Conference for Just Communities named him a Leader in the Arts; Buffalo Spree named him Best Media Personality in Western New York; at Buffalo State, where he is assistant dean of humanities, he was named Outstanding Faculty Member at the Student Life Awards.

Over the years, I’ve come to think of it as the Elevator of Babel. Riding up and down in the Hyatt Regency hotel that has hosted the Montreal World Film Festival for as long as I’ve been attending it (since 1995), one hears any number of different languages: French, of course, Montreal being a Francophone city, and lots of German, but also Spanish, Turkish, Portuguese, various Asian languages, and others that I could only guess if I recognized the speakers because I’d seen their film.

The Age of the Selfie

by Woody Brown

So, answer me this. Do you like to look at people looking at themselves? I do not. But watching people stare at themselves is a large part of what the internet is. Consider, for instance, Facebook, which is in many respects a hall of mirrors in which you examine others only as they desire to be seen, and by which you create and maintain meticulously, like a little bonsai homunculus, your ideal image of yourself.

Old World Meets New: The 2013 Dodge Dart Rallye

by Jim Corbran

Detroit is getting nostalgic. For the good old days? Well, not totally. Yeah, the profits were nice but that near-bankruptcy thing put the fear of God into them. That, and the ever-rising sales of foreign vehicles in North America.

News of the Weird

by Chuck Shepherd

Are We Safe? In August, Daniel Castillo’a Jet Ski broke down in New York City’s Jamaica Bay, forcing him to swim to the nearest shore—at JFK International Airport. As Castillo roamed the grounds, he somehow failed to disturb the airport’s $100 million, state-of-the-art Perimeter Intrusion Detection System of cameras and motion sensors, stumbling into the Delta terminal before an employee noticed him.
