Justice Delayed: Judge Postpones Ruling in Buckley Case

“We’re gonna celebrate,” a supporter of Nate Buckley said to another sympathizer as they waited for a hearing before Judge Joseph A. Fiorella to begin in Buffalo City Court Monday morning. Fiorella was scheduled to deliver a ruling on a motion to dismiss criminal charges “in the interests of justice,” filed in August by defense attorneys Michael Kuzma and Daire Brian Irwin. As events unfolded after the 9:50am start, celebratory plans had to be suspended.

An elected official in the Town of Alden hasn’t paid his property taxes in more than five years and is in peril of losing his home to foreclosure.

UB President Defends Shale Institute

On Wednesday, September 12, State University of New York (SUNY) Trustees requested a report from UB “regarding the formation of the UB Shale Institute, the selection of its directors, and the publication of its initial report, including that natural gas companies requested that the institute be formed, were involved in the selection of its directors and significant errors in its first report, including misstating that it was peer reviewed.”

City Hall Notes

Jessica Maglietto-Smith—a special assistant to Mayor Byron Brown who worked for Brown when he was a state senator, followed him to City Hall, was sponsored by the mayor’s political team as a nuisance candidate against Delaware District Councilman Mike LoCurto in 2007, lost, then ran the CitiStat program for a spell, before being promoted to her current $62,000 per year gig—has been named by the mayor to the board of directors of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library.
