Earth Day Message: Turn, Don't Burn

On Tuesday the Sierra Club announced the beginning of a Campaign for Renewable Energy in New York State to “Turn, Don’t Burn.” Events, ads, and billboards are being launched in Buffalo, Rochester, Binghamton, and Auburn urging Governor Andrew Cuomo to make New York a national leader in clean energy. Specifically, we’re asking Cuomo to take administrative action to meet and extend the state’s renewable energy goal of 30 percent by 2015, and to develop new renewable energy sources like wind and solar instead of any continued investment in fossil fuels.

Yelling Won't Fix Our Schools

Mike Madigan (“Paladino: The Politics of Agitation,” Letters to AV, April 11) is correct; agitation can be a powerful tool. However, agitation based on fragile knowledge and without ideas for effective solutions will give us more of the same, a lack of results and lots of bad feeling.

Boy Scouts is About Equality

The Boy Scouts of America is a 103-year-old organization consisting of scouts of different faiths, politics, wealth, and background. When news of a potential membership policy change leaked, I hoped this would usher in a new era for the Boy Scouts, setting an example of unity and equality by making it more encompassing and welcoming.
