May is National Bike Month

It’s May, and bicyclists are popping up everywhere, like tulips.

“This is the time of year for everyone to give bicycling a try whether it’s for fun, fitness or transportation,” says Justin Booth, executive director of GObike Buffalo. His group has already held a few events to help increase enthusiasm, including a bike drive and barbecue. On May 8, 16 schools across the city participated in National Bike to School Day.

This Saturday, May 11, GOBike’s mobile shop will be at the Bidwell Farmer’s Market from 8am to 1pm, offering minor repairs to get riders safely on the road. Later, from 5pm to 8pm, at the MAP office at 271 Grant street, vegan chef Joshua Ploeg will serve dinner as authors Elly Blue and Joe Biel discuss bicycle inspired books and documentaries. This event is $10 for adults and $5 for children and registration can be made at gobikebuffalo.org.

Sunday, May 12 at 11am, it’s time for CycloFemme—a ride that “honors the past, celebrates the present, and empowers the future of women on bikes and the opportunity for positive social change.” Did you know that the bicycle played a key role in the women’s rights movement, and changed the course of fashion? This leisurely ride starts at 11am at 98 Colvin Avenue, winds through Delaware Park and along the Scajaquada Pathway to Squaw Island.

Next week—Bike to Work Week—GOBike is sponsoring commuter breakfasts at Sweetness_7 on Monday, Café Taza on Tuesday, Ashker’s Café and Juice Bar on Wednesday, Golden Cup Café on Thursday, and on Friday in the parking lot across from GOBike’s 929 Washington street office.

Also on Friday, May 17, two gallery openings of a bicycle-inspired art show to benefit GOBike will be held at Main (St)udios, 515 Main Street. The lunchtime opening is noon-2pm; the after-dinner opening, 7-9pm.

On Saturday, May 18, GOBike, the Buffalo Bisons, Flying Bison Brewery, and Ulrich’s Tavern will be encouraging folks to ride their bike to Coca Cola Field. Meet at Ulrich’s for discounted food, beer, and free pop before the 7:30pm game and a complimentary first beer. $10 for GOBike members; $12 for non-members.

In the meantime, ride safely. If you’re driving, remember to keep your eyes open for cyclists. Their numbers will continue to swell as we move into our beautiful Buffalo summer.
