PANDORA’S BOX (1929, Germany)—The film that made Louise Brooks a sexual icon, though not until many years later—on its original release, this was shown in most places only in cut or reedited versions. The great director G. W. Pabst provides a suitably dank, visually heightened setting for her performance as a Weimar Berlin prostitute who wreaks havoc on every man she meets, something she is not unwilling to turn to her advantage. Presented as part of the Buffalo Film Seminars. Market Arcade

STARRY STARRY NIGHT—The closing night film from the recent Buffalo International Film Festival was this family drama from Taiwan that received numerous awards for its special effects. When a young girl’s world is changed forever by her parents’ divorce, she seeks comfort in a marvelous fantasy world inspired by her grandparents. Screening Room

VERTIGO (1958)— Guilt ridden over the death of a policeman and a woman he was hired to watch, James Stewart falls madly (literally) in love with a shopgirl who resembles the dead woman. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Screening Room

WORDPLAY—Jon Stewart, Bob Dole, Bill Clinton, Ken Burns, and others discuss their love of crossword puzzles in this documentary centering on Will Shortz, puzzle editor of the New York Times. Directed by Patrick Creadon. Presented by the Hubbard Film Society. Aurora
