When the great poet Lucille Clifton died, the New York Times said that she was a member of a group of Buffalo black intellectuals. They left out the Irish, Italian, and Jewish American intellectuals, artists, writers, and musicians, who from 1957 (I was 19) to the fall of 1962, when Dave Sharpe and I left for New York on a Greyhound bus, banded together to create a Renaissance in the city.

Seth Avett likes to use the word “journey” often and in earnest. An artist’s journey, he implies, does not have a clean beginning, middle, and end. It is a series of creative impulses that extends over a lifetime. Whether Avett is talking about himself or his musical acquaintance, Bob Dylan, the subtext is always clear: Avett believes he has not arrived because he never will.

According to Wikipedia…yeah, I know, but according to Wikipedia the new 2014 Chevrolet Impala is the nameplate’s 10th generation. And, without even asking the Wikipedia folks I’ll bet that just about everyone reading this has either a parent, grandparent, or a neighbor who owned one (at least one) at some point since the first 1958 Impala hit the showrooms.

The Department of Agriculture reported recently that in four of America’s largest cities—New York, Miami, Los Angeles and Denver—nearly one home out of 100 keeps chickens either for a fresh egg supply or as pets, giving rise to chicken services such as Backyard Poultry magazine, MyPetChicken.com and Julie Baker’s Pampered Poultry store.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Giant Sequoias are the biggest trees on the planet. Many are more than 300 feet tall and 30 feet wide. Their longevity is legendary, too. They can live for 2,000 years. And yet their seeds are tiny.
