Sit-Down For the Outer Harbor, Stadium Summit

Starting this Friday, June 21, and every Friday thereafter until the fall equinox on Sunday, September 22, the Campaign for Greater Buffalo is inviting anyone and everyone to join in a “Sit-Down for the Sunset” in Buffalo’s Outer Harbor. Here’s the idea, per a release sent out on Wednesday morning:

• Bring a chair and enjoy the greatest show on earth every Friday—sunset over Lake Erie.

• Solstice to Equinox (Sunday, Sept 22).

• Spread the word: Buffalo is the only major city in the northeast where the

sun sets over the water—we can’t lose it!

• Prevent a Mistake on the Lake: no big-box stadium, no big-box retail, no big-box whatever!

• Demonstrate the public interest to keep the waterfront forever open.

• Do it this summer—before it’s too late!

Tim Tielman of the Campaign for Greater Buffalo says that the point of the summer-long demonstration is to show Empire State Development Corporation—which, through it subsidiary, the Erie Canal Harbor Corporation, will soon control the Outer Harbor property currently owen by the NFTA—the community’s first priority in waterfront development is public access.

Meantime, Greater Buffalo Sports & Entertainment Complex, LLC, the company that is promoting the idea of building a sports stadium, convention center, and entertainment complex on part of the nearly 400-acre property, will host a public presentation on their project next Wednesday, June 26 at 11am, in the auditorium of the Burchfield Penney Art Center. The featured speakers will be a trio of representatives from HKS Architects, the Dallas-based firm that has designed numerous professional sports stadiums and is partnering with Greater Buffalo Sports & Entertainment Complex, LLC.
