Clifton Childree: Niaga-Rag Follies

Art Openings

For his installation at Hallwalls, Miami-based artist Clifton Childree is creating a speculative local history that grows out of his exploration of Niagara Falls and QRS Music Rolls, a player piano roll company still operating in Buffalo. The work will combine film, strange narrative, stereoscopes, a newly composed musical score, sculpture, found objects, dioramas, and a host of other elements.

If that sounds vague, this quote Childree gave to Huffington Post might establish the tenor of his work: “I was born in LA (Lower Alabama) under the sign ‘Red Light District’ during low tide in the gene pool. You may have seen me playing the washtub bass with Boise Bob and His Backyard Band. I married a dancing monkey, adopted two filthy street dogs and a mean old black cat. If you stand close enough to me, you can hear the ocean.”

The exhibit opens with an artist’s talk and reception on Friday, September 13, 8-11pm. Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, 341 Delaware Avenue.
