	In March of 1868, as part of his acclaimed American reading tour, Charles Dickens visited Buffalo. He performed two sold-out shows at St. James Hall, a venue located where One M&T Plaza is today. Scalpers were able to resell tickets for many times their $2 face value.
	Two New Theater Companies: Raices and Buffalo Public by Anthony Chase
	Two new theater companies in residence at established theaters open shows this week. Raíces, Buffalo’s new Latino theater company, premiers with La Ginga by Carmen Rivera, “the story of a young woman born and raised in NYC in search of her Puerto Rican roots,” in residence at Road Less Traveled theater. Buffalo Public Theatre, in association with Ujima Company, Inc., is opening The Wizard of Oz at TheaterLoft.
	Bounty at the New Phoenix by Anthony Chase
	The current production of Bounty: the Mutiny, as recreated by the sailors of Pitcairn’s Island, devised and directed by Robert Waterhouse and developed by the New Phoenix Theatre Company, confirms, as if there were any doubt, that the deep thrust of the New Phoenix performance space is one of the most dynamic and exciting in town. Waterhouse and his crew of mutineers take us on an imaginative and intriguing journey back to the 18th century with Captain Bligh and Fletcher Christian. We get a highly theatrical exploration (with some poetic license) into the known facts of a maritime adventure in which a group of Englishmen went native.
