Being Like Us

by Bruce Fisher

At 2pm this coming Sunday, December 22, Ukrainians here and in Ontario will meet at the Peace Bridge to hold a solidarity demonstration. They want local politicians and good-government people to get with the program supported by the hundreds of thousands of pro-democracy activists back home in Kiev, the ancient city whose Maidan, or central square, has been occupied by hundreds of thousands of demonstrators for the past month. The Ukrainians want our help.

Round 1, Week 3: INLITE vs. The Seven Sixteens

Welcome to the eighth installment of Artvoice’s Battle of Original Music—a contest we call BOOM, for short. Briefly, here’s how it works: Each week, we will feature two local, original music acts like the ones you see to your right. Next, hundreds of readers like you will visit boom.artvoice.com to listen to their music and click on the band they like the best. Dispatches: War of 1812

Why, We Are All Alone!

by Mason Winfield

Buffalo in 1813 was a merry little village nestled into the elbow of the Niagara River and the Buffalo Creek. Most of its 500-800 citizens lived and worked west of today’s Ellicott Street and south of today’s Chippewa. Heavy woods crept up to the village limits, broken only by creeks, cart-paths, and the occasional homestead.

Japan’s “cat cafes” allow the pet-starved to relax while dining by caressing house kittens that roam the facilities, but similar eateries have opened recently featuring owls (the Fukurou Sabou in Tokyo, Owl Family in Osaka). (The owls are not caressable and easily spooked by excessive noise.)

North Park Theatre Sneak Peek

The ongoing renovation of the North Park Theatre on Hertel Avenue promises to reveal and restore that gem of a venue’s long-hidden treasures. The new owners and operators are hosting a fundraising gala on December 27, 7-10pm, to give the public a sneak peek and to help offset the cost of the extensive work they’ve put in so far.
