Many of us who work on tight deadlines thrive on the desperation produced by rapidly closing windows of of opportunity. We grow more creative in our problem-solving, and sometimes we do our best work with the clock running down to zero.

Let’s say you’re drawing a blank—and we mean a wall of lake-effect whiteout—on what to give a friend or loved one who has everything, or wants nothing, or who is just, every year, an insoluble cipher.

The holidays are well upon us. Most of the cultural venues have posted their open houses for annual group shows and season themed exhibitions. Artists holding open studios with wine and cheese advertise their branding for commissions and special discounted pricing for reproductions of their original works. In other words, they follow the business model of every other sort of commercial venture.

Every year when it’s time for last-minute gift recommendations, I dutifully recommend the gift of theater tickets. The Theatre Alliance of Buffalo makes the task easier with the continuation of “Theater Bucks.” This is a gift certificate program that allows the recipient to use the “Theater Bucks” certificate as if it were cash at participating theater box offices. In some instances, the certificates can also be used for classes or merchandise.

Really? You’re still shopping for that car-driver on your list? Well, I could make it easy here, and satisfy a lot of my friends in the car business, by just telling you to break out the checkbook and buy that special someone a new car. There’s still time, you know. But even I wouldn’t do that. No, there are cheaper—scratch that—less expensive alternatives out there that you can still have under the tree in time.
