Nathan Winograd: No-Kill Animal Shelter Advocate, Lightning Rod
Earlier this week, AV contributor and legal counsel Peter A. Reese posted this innoucuous little notice on AV Daily at Artvoice.com:
Mahatma Ghandi said the greatness of a nation can be judged by how it treats its animals. In this coutry, at least 4 million cats and dogs are killed by shelters annually. I guess we could be greater. Nathan Winograd says he has a better way.
Nathan J. Winograd, is a world expert, author, lecturer, advocate and spokesperson for the “No Kill” movement. Winograd is the Director of the national No Kill Advocacy Center. He is a graduate of Stanford Law School, a former criminal prosecutor and attorney, and held a variety of leadership positions including director of operations and executive director of two of the most successful shelters in the nation. He has spoken nationally and internationally on animal sheltering issues, has written animal protection legislation at the state and national level, has created successful No Kill programs in both urban and rural communities, and has consulted with a wide range of animal protection groups including some of the largest and best known in the world.
Nathan Winograd is speaking on Sunday, February 17 at noon, at the UB Center for the Arts, witha cocktail reception to follow. (The event is free and open to the public, but those who wish to attend must pre-register at NoKillBuffaloNiagara.org.) His presentation will offer a blueprint for Western New Yorkers who want the region’s shelters to stop euthanizing animals.
Here’s the remarkable thing: Reese’s post unleashed a torrid debate in the comments section—369 comments and counting at our print deadline—including attacks on Winograd’s credibility and character.
Who knew people were so passionate about killing (and not killing) animals? Come on Sunday to find out why.blog comments powered by Disqus
