David Oliver has directed Matt Witten at Road Less Traveled in this one-man retelling of The Iliad, Homer’s epic story of Achilles, Agamemnon, and the siege and fall of Troy. The idea of The Iliad, as a one-man affair, of course, is not new—the poem is part of an oral tradition. This version of the classic tale, by Denis O’Hare and Lisa Peterson, evokes echoes of numerous wars throughout history, up to and including current events in Syria. Witten gives an energetic and impassioned performance, in what can only be called a tour de force.
