The Great Beauty

During the first few minutes of Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty, viewers may well wonder if they’re watching a remake of Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita from a half-century ago. It opens with brilliantly lit shots of Rome’s ancient monuments and renaissance fountains, intercut with a scene of intense, large-scale nighttime partying on an expansive terrace. In the midst of these appositions, a Japanese tourist takes a photo and drops dead.

Those of you chafing over the lack of a Nicholas Sparks adaptation in theaters this year will be able to make do with this, a straightfaced tale of impossible love from just about the last source you might expect: Jason Reitman, the writer-director of such glibly comic movies as Juno and Up in the Air.

Oscar Nominated Short Films 2014

Having learned over the years that audiences are more likely to watch the Academy Awards telecast when they have been exposed to as many of the nominated films as possible, the nominees for the short films awards are once again being made available to theaters. Beginning this Friday, two separate programs of the live-action and animated shorts will be playing at the Market Arcade and Eastern Hills Mall theaters.
