To The Top
by Anthony Chase
I was not startled when a member of the Alleyway company described their current offering, Ron Radice’s To the Top, as “Waiting for Godot meets The Odd Couple.” I’d been thinking exactly the same thing—with a couple of moments from Guys and Dolls tossed in for good measure.
Tim Joyce and Tom Owen play a couple of tramps, inexplicably on a seemingly endless journey to the top of a mountain. On the way they meet a variety of unlikely characters, each a cultural archetype played by David C. Mitchell.
Under the direction of Neal Radice (no relation to the playwright), the actors keep this journey moving along, like Samuel Beckett, from philosophical reflection to philosophical reflection, and from comic burlesque routine to comic burlesque routine.
