For nearly 20 years Buffalo native Stephen Powell has been proving himself to be one of the most dynamic and prolific of filmmakers to emerge from the Queen City. In recent years he has drawn upon his wide range of experiences to produce independent documentaries, a unique area he’s long been passionate about.

It was a former chief judge of the New York Court of Appeals who opined, ex cathedrally, that a determined prosecuting attorney can obtain a grand jury indictment of a ham sandwich. Whether his subsequent indictment for stalking a woman and her daughter, and the termination of his legal-practice license, and, of course, his resignation from the court, have any bearing on the judge’s opinion, illustratively or otherwise, may be hard to say.

People were really upset about the name,” says Jason Havens, one-third of the brains and brawn behind Rusty Nickel Brewing Company. “They said it was too close to Rusty Chain—we talked to Tim [Herzog, of Flying Bison Brewing] and he was fine with it. The best, though, are the people who tell us that nickels can’t rust.

What do you get when you invite half of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra’s cello section to present a recital on your concert series? Well, if BPO associate principal Feng Hew and her fellow section members Amelie Fradette, David Schmude and Eva Herer get together to perform duos, trios and quartets for cello, you certainly get “Cello Power” the name of the next event on the Friends of Vienna series that takes place on Sunday, March 29 at 3:30pm at the Unity Church, 1243 Delaware Avenue.

Amongst the many movie genres I can think of there are few that tend to prove more problematic than the anthology film. This can often be attributed to how wildly inconsistent most are, not merely in the way episodes can vary in overall quality, but also in how its difficult for a style or tone to be sustained throughout.

We have “139 frogs, toads, lizards, turtles,” Ms. Thayer Cuter told Seattle’s MyNorthwest.com in March, touting her Edmonds, Washington, amphibian rescue shop, especially the heroic job done recently on Rocky, the Texas toad who came with stones in his tummy. “He had to have a lot of enemas (but) Rocky is rock-free now”

ARIES (March 21-April 19): The term “jumped the shark” often refers to a TV show that was once great but gradually grew stale, and then resorted to implausible plot twists in a desperate attempt to revive its creative verve. I’m a little worried that you may do the equivalent of jumping the shark in your own sphere.
