On the sixth day, God created Man and named him Adam. When Adam fell asleep that afternoon, God created women and booze. Adam woke up and said, “Oh yeah, this is good.” But by 1920, American women of the Temperance Movement didn’t agree it was all that good and they shut that booze shit down with the 18th Amendment and Prohibition.

Now in its 58th year, the Allentown Art Festival is a staple of the Queen City’s summer scene. During the second weekend of June, people from across the area flock to the blocked off sections on Allen Street, Delaware Avenue, and Franklin Street to check out and purchase works of art in all different mediums. Something first time festival patrons may not realize when walking west on Allen is that by crossing Elmwood Avenue they have entered into the Allen West Festival.

Local author and creative writing teacher, Mary Mullet-Flynn, will launch her new novella Cherry Blossom Diaries. The novella is based on the authentic diaries of Deborah Peters, recorded from March 19, 1942 to August 14, 1945, set during World War II. Mullet-Flynn found these real-life encounters fascinating, and she says her favorite part of writing the novella was getting to know Deborah.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): I think it’ll be better if you don’t engage in much sacrifice, compromise, or surrender in the next two weeks. Normally they are valuable tools to have at your disposal, but for now they may tend to be counterproductive.
