Frampton Comes Alive

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, UB’s Department of Media Study was located in the relatively tiny Wende Hall on the south campus. The dramatically underfunded department was also a hotbed of creativity—a place where students were exposed to radically experimental works by three instructors who are widely regarded as cutting edge artists in the structural film movement of the day: Tony Conrad, Paul Sharits, and Hollis Frampton.

Theatrically Speaking

An interview with Shaw Festival actor Martin Happer

by Anthony Chase

With his square jaw and rugged good looks, if Martin Happer hadn’t become a star of the Shaw Festival, he could have been a model for Disney princes and heroes. In fact, his tendency to play entirely deluded men often puts him on a cartoon-like reality plane, particularly this season when he plays “Black Stache,” the evil pirate destined to become Captain Hook in Peter and the Starcatcher.

2015 Jeep Renegade

by Jim Corbran

Renegade seems like a good name for the newest Jeep. It’s built in—gasp!—Melfi, Italy on an assembly line which also produces the Fiat 500L. This makes it the first Jeep to be sold in America which wasn’t built in America. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Apartment buyers in ridiculously expensive Hong Kong are now eagerly paying up to the equivalent of $500,000 (U.S.) for units not much bigger than a U.S. parking space (and typically physically self-measured by the applicant’s wing-span).

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Before E. Annie Proulx became a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, she wrote a series of how-to books, including a dairy foods cookbook and an instructional text on making your own hard cider. But the manual of hers that I especially want to call your attention to right now is Plan and Make Your Own Fences & Gates, Walkways, Walls & Drives.
