The Mayoral Race

Dear Editor,

The Buffalo News recently published an article offering the readers an in depth look at the front runners in the race for mayor of the City of Buffalo. As a life-long City of Buffalo resident I was anxious to read it. After I read the article I was dismayed to find it did little to show us the political record of either candidate.

We the city residents need proper information to make an informed vote. One point that has angered me is the lack of media attention to the deceitful and negative tactics candidates use to gain voter support.

I have seen some recent examples of this from the Helfer campaign. As anyone navigates the city it is not hard to spot the blue and white signage on lawns stating ‘Helfer for Mayor’; this is only different in South Buffalo where signs are green and white. In a predominantly Irish neighborhood one can only assume that South Buffalonians are supposed to think “Irish” or “white” while casting their vote. Another is the debut television ad by Helfer accusing his challanger, Brown of accepting donations from Giambra. Helfer conveniently leaves out that he, himself was a member of that same administration.

While passing Helfer’s campaign headquarters on Delaware and Allen, one only has to look at the front window to see more Brown bashing. Hung in the window is a poster similar to a baseball scoreboard smearing Brown as batting zero while Helfer bats seven.

This type of activity is exactly what is wrong with this city, from what I have witnessed of Helfer, he offers nothing in the way of positive change.

It is time Buffalonians pay attention and vote responsibly so that we can turn this city in a positive direction.

Artvoice,

At every level of government the graft, greed, corruption, self-interest and incompetence of those who “serve” the taxpayer are chronicled daily in the pages of local newspapers like this from one end of this country to the other, and yet those few of you who do bother to participate in the political process continually re-elect the same bumbling, corrupt representatives.

A caring, compassionate citizenry choosing to govern itself at all levels with the worst kind of people it can find; Masiello, Giambra, Pataki, Bush; all re-elected after doing horrendous damage at humungous taxpayer expense. Curious.

Redeemingly, this is America, and so we are regularly granted the opportunity to see the error of our ways and correct them.

There’s going to be a new mayor in Buffalo. That’s a good place to start.

Sin City?

Artvoice:

Several weeks ago, a self-proclaimed “Christian” guy that I happen to know commented that New Orleans was a very sinful city, and was in need of a good “washing” like the one provided by Hurricane Katrina. Even he acknoweledged that Katrina was perhaps a bit much, however the city needed to be washed nonetheless.

If I see him this week I’ll be sure to ask him if Texas is sinful also, and was also in need of a good “cleansing” from Hurricane Rita.

Correction

In the “Out of Energy” cover story, two weeks ago [Sept. 29-Oct. 5] Linda Hardie’s name was incorrectly spelled Lynn. Also, the abbreviation “SSV” was incorrectly used, when it should have been “FFV,” which stands for Flexible Fuel Vehicle.
