HR4437: Illegal Immigration Control Act

Last week’s nationwide protests against HR 4437 made the nation aware of the impact immigrants have on the workforce. The bill, already passed by the House, would make illegal immigration a felony and would seek to penalize and deport any illegal immigrants in the US. The unified front displayed particularly by Latinos has led some protesters to draw comparisons of their plight to that of African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement. While the Senate begins to debate the bill, we asked Buffalonians if it’s right to send 12 million people back to their home countries, perhaps to the detriment of our economy.

Do you agree with the House bill that would deport all illegal aliens and make giving them aid a felony? I don’t agree with it. I think those that are here illegally, and they’ve been here for quite some time, they should be given the chance to become legalized. And those who have recently come here to the United States, those are the ones that should be sent back, and from there be able to…apply to enter legally.

Do you think it’s a racial issue? I don’t think it’s a racial issue, because I think if it was another nationality coming over illegally, it still would be a problem for most people. Because of the economy, there’s not enough jobs as it is for everyone to accommodate their families, so I don’t think it’s a racial issue.

If the bill passes and 12 million illegal immigrants, working jobs they say no one else wants, are deported, who will fill their place, and how will it affect the economy? That’s going to be tough, because you have some people in the United States who were born here who simply don’t want to work, so it’s going to be tough to fill those positions. You also have those who do want to work, but it’s the types of jobs that they’re not interested in working. A lot of people here in the United States do not want to work a low-income job because they feel like the American dream is to have a high-income job to support their family. Who wants to work a low-income job?

Do you agree with the House bill that would deport all illegal aliens and make giving them aid a felony? No, absolutely not. They’re a big part of the workforce, a big part of the economy, and we just kind of take it for granted. We don’t realize the strength they give to our economy.

Do you think it’s a racial issue? Who knows with Bush. I would hope not.

If the bill passes and 12 million illegal immigrants, working jobs they say no one else wants, are deported, who will fill their place, and how will it affect the economy? Well, it would affect the economy tremendously. I don’t think the average American citizen would want to do it.

Do you agree with the House bill that would deport all illegal aliens and make giving them aid a felony? No. I’d like there to be a policy where you can try to bring them into the country, rather than deport them; let’s make them a part of us. They’re already here helping us out.

Do you think it’s a racial issue? No, I just think it’s a legal issue, really.

If the bill passes and 12 million illegal immigrants, working jobs they say no one else wants, are deported, who will fill their place, and how will it affect the economy? If that happens, I think the jobs might pay more to attract workers, who would do it for a little higher price. It may cause a little bit of inflation, or slightly higher prices.
