Buffalo's Beaches: Where Will Buffalo Swim This Summer?

With summer nearly here and the temperatures beginning to rise, people in Buffalo are looking for a place to cool down, relax and swim this summer. So close to so much fresh water, Buffalo would seem an obvious destination for any beach-goer. However, the city on the lake is almost completely without swimming beaches today—despite much talk about developing a beach inside city limits, swimmers still must make their way to Canada or points south. With Bennett and Wendt Beaches closed for the season and Gallagher Beach becoming a state-controlled park, we wondered where Buffalonians will go to get to a beach this year and if they think they will ever get a swimming beach of their own inside the city.

Name: Serena Tabor

Occupation: Legal secretary

Residence: Kenmore

Should Buffalo use its proximity to so much fresh water and create a swimming beach inside city limits? That would be good. We have the whole waterfront area downtown that could draw people in and that is not being used at all.

Now that Gallagher Beach is a state park, do you believe that it will be better kept and reopened to the public as a swimming beach? If it was run by the state then yes, because then it will be out of the control of the county.

Where will you go this summer if you want to go to a beach? I’d head up to a beach in Ontario.

Name: Dorothy

Occupation: Project director

Residence: Buffalo

Should Buffalo use its proximity to so much fresh water and create a swimming beach inside city limits? Without a doubt. We as a family will go to Canada. If we do go to a local beach we’ll go to Woodlawn, but I get a little ticked about how much it is. I think it should be free with the taxes I pay.

Now that Gallagher Beach is a state park, do you believe that it will be better kept and reopened to the public as a swimming beach? No. Only because the beach is closed for a lot of different reasons and I think the state will not be able to control all of the problems.

Where will you go this summer if you want to go to a beach? I will usually go to Canada or Woodlawn.

Name: Kevin

Occupation: Graphic designer

Residence: Corfu

Should Buffalo use its proximity to so much fresh water and create a swimming beach inside city limits? Yes, I think it would be beneficial, especially if they are trying to expand the waterfront. It could bring more people downtown in off hours, besides the usual nine-to-five.

Now that Gallagher Beach is a state park, do you believe that it will be better kept and reopened to the public as a swimming beach? I’m not really familiar with that beach, but I always see it on the news how beaches are closing because of bacteria or they don’t have enough lifeguards on duty. So right now it’s hard to say.

Where will you go this summer if you want to go to a beach? Probably out to Darien Lake state park. If there was a beach downtown then it would definitely be a draw.

Name: Dawn Nelson

Occupation: Banking

Residence: Buffalo

Should Buffalo use its proximity to so much fresh water and create a swimming beach inside city limits? No. I don’t believe that at this point they [the City of Buffalo] should. They should instead be developing things other than a beach. Maybe later on. But they should first develop the waterfront first of all. The beach is a good idea, but maybe in 10 years.

Now that Gallagher Beach is a state park, do you believe that it will be better kept and reopened to the public as a swimming beach? I would like to think that they could keep it up to cleaner standards than it was previously. But I really don’t know.

Where will you go this summer if you want to go to a beach? I’d probably go up to Bay Beach in Canada.
