Microradio Sound Walk

It’s easy to forget that the air around is a great swirl of transmitted waves, from radio signals to the airwaves made by our cell phones. I’d imagine that if you could plug antennae into your head, at any given time you’d hear three different broadcasts of Toto’s “Africa” and perhaps pick up Aunt Millie complaining long distance about her arthritis to Uncle Skip.

There are artists out there exploring the soundscapes created by these transmissions, and learning how to create their own unique sonic murals. This Saturday, such artists will use Hallwalls’ space to create the Microradio Sound Walk. It will consist of three FM transmission stations—Local Frequencies, Environmental Nature and Social Spaces—microcasting on the same frequency at different locations in Hallwalls’ new space at the Asbury Church and branching out into the surrounding neighborhood. As visitors go on the microradio sound walk through this space with a borrowed radio, the three signals will fade in and out, reacting to their movement through the architectural and sonic landscape. “Local Frequencies” will be microcast by radio-transmission based theater company 31 Down. The station will sample and play back the local airwaves created by various electronic devices, including cell phone and scanners, among others. Matt Bua will microcast “Environmental Nature,” using microphones to completely wire Hallwalls’ space. “Social Spaces” will be microcast by Radio Ruido, and will focus on the physicality of the performance space, as well as audience interaction and storytelling.

The event, presented by free103point9, a non-profit media arts group focused on transmission arts, will surely be a truly unique and enjoyable experience.

Saturday, June 3 at 8pm. Hallwalls, 341 Delaware Ave., Buffalo(854-1694).
