Cristina Page at Talking Leaves

While the title of her new book—How the Pro-Choice Movement Saved America—seems to indicate otherwise, Cristina Page wants the same things that many pro-lifers do: namely fewer abortions, and pro-family and pro-child policies.

Page, who has worked in the editorial departments of Ms. and Glamour magazines, takes on the pro-life movement in her book, pointing out that not only is the constitutional right to abortion in danger, but so are our rights to safe, accessible means of contraception.

She says that the pro-life movement’s aim is not fewer abortions or an end to abortions, but rather a transformation of our sex lives, a transformation of the family and restricted access to contraceptives. “That’s the goal,” she said in an interview with Bitch editor Rachel Fudge, “and restricting abortion is just one vehicle toward that end.”

In the end, Page says, those policies have a paradoxical result: more abortions, more maternal fatalities and more infant fatalities.

Page’s message should be heard by everybody, but is very much aimed at the everyday pro-lifers of America. She believes they are being misled and misrepresented by politicized pro-life organizations whose agenda differs very much from that of the average pro-lifer. Gee, sound familiar to anyone?
