Septuagenarian Slugger: Rocky Balboa

Bob Hope once did a television sketch in which Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed entered the ring for their umpteenth rematch with the aid of walkers. Although Apollo was killed by the Frankenstein-like Soviet super boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, Hope still got it half right. Rocky Balboa finds the legendary Italian Stallion proving to himself and the world that he’s still got some fight left in him despite belonging to AARP.

Passion and Pedagogy: The History Boys

I never saw Beyond the Fringe, the famous, early 1960s comedy review Alan Bennett appeared in and helped write, but I have a vague recollection of one sketch involving a prison warden from a recording of the show, and a firm recollection of one line. The perturbed official, told of homosexual activity among the prisoners, responds testily, “Just let them have their fun; they’ll find out just how unappealing men can be!” (Or words to that effect.)

A Yalie in the Puzzle Palace: The Good Shepherd

You might think that this is a particularly opportune time for a film about the birth and development of the Central Intelligence Agency. In the five years since the 9/11 attacks, the CIA has received more public scrutiny—most of it disapproving—than in its previous almost 54 years of existence.
