The Genuflektors

The Genuflektors—once a trio, lately a duo— at least for the summer have a new third wheel in flutist Jeannine Giffear. Giffear takes off for Morocco in the fall, but in the meantime the Genuflektors (Giffear, KT on cello, Josh Gage on guitar) have declared a summer of collaboration and groovy exploration, drawing out the more atmospheric and even chaotic possibilities in Gage’s songs. The trio is joined by the slick Chris Cannon, the inimitable Leigh Stoner and the excellent Erin Verhoef. The show starts at 8:30pm tonight (Thursday, July 5) at Nietzsche’s.

The Canal Concert Series

The Canal Concert Series will be “Rockin’ the Colonies” this week, all the way back to the 1980s. Iconic British new-wavers the Psychedelic Furs have joined up with co-headliners the Alarm (pictured) and the Fixx, stopping at Gateway Harbor Park in North Tonawanda on Saturday (July 7). Although the Fixx and the Furs have continued to play together throughout the years, the Alarm had splintered by the nineties, coming back together in 2005 for a memorable Bands Reunited episode on VH1. 2006 has since seen the release of Under Attack (Eleven Thirty Records), the Alarm’s first album since group-founder Mike Peters was diagnosed with leukemia. Prognosis is favorable, and plans for future releases and tours are underway for all of these groups. This retro mod-punk showcase is totally free, and starts at 5:30pm.

Silverstein

After what sounds like a rocky end to a seven year relationship, Silverstein singer Shane Told sat down with his band mates to record their fourth album with Victory Records. Told’s vocals reverberate with heartwrenching lyrics, transitioning from emo to screamo and giving the eleven new tracks real emotional appeal. This Burlington, Ontario band has already seen success with the combined sales of their previous albums. They now await the release of Arrivals and Departures (out July 3). As part of their North American tour Silverstein will be performing with headliners Rise Against. Evolution will host the bands Monday (July 9), along with Comeback Kid. Doors open at 6:30pmcara gallivan

Page France

Page France is the brainchild of Michael Nau, a Maryland native whose songwriting recalls as much Mark Twain as it does Sufjan Stevens. Using Nau’s off kitler songs as a template, Page France began recording earlier this decade with the help of the various musicians who fill out Nau’s vision. With the use of banjo, glockenspiel, and other instruments in addition to the standard rock lineup, the band creates a sound invoking American gothic stories with jangly indie folk. Their recently released fifth recording Page France and the Family Telephone refines their sound with subtlety and simplicity while also showcasing Nau’s profound lyrics. Page France performs at Mohawk Place on Wednesday (July 11) at 8pm. Cassi Meyerhoffer and Nick Gordon open the show.
