Defiant Art, Daring Fans?

Offering itself up as a venue for just about anything you can imagine (and some things you almost certainly couldn’t), Allentown will soon be overrun with the controversially creative art that Buffalo’s Infringement Festival is known and loved for. Canvases and cabaret will give life to street corners as Buffalo opens its arms to local and visiting artists, not just braced for but embracing whatever might come along. And in spite of the handy calendar on the festival Web site (infringebuffalo.org), one is never sure what is coming next. As the artists make their final preparations, we wanted to see what kind of crowd they might draw. We asked a few Buffalonians strutting the streets whether they know about the Infringement Festival and the sort of art they are interested in. Here’s what they said:

Name: Marli Lee-McGarrah

Occupation: Student

Residence: Buffalo

Do you know what the Infringement Festival is? No, I do not.

If you had to guess? I have no idea. Would it have to do with art?

If you were to perform at the Infringement Festival what would you do? I’m not very artistic. Can it be musical? If so, I would play guitar.

Which is more interesting or valuable to you, art in a gallery or art on a street corner? Probably the one on the street corner, so I could ask them a lot of questions.

Name: Neil Wechsler

Occupation: Writer

Residence: Buffalo

Do you know what the Infringement Festival is? Not exactly. I’ve heard about it.

If you could do anything at the Infringement Festival, what would you do? I don’t know that I would do anything with my own particular work. I’m a writer, and I tend to work in a very private manner. But I would like to go and see what’s there.

Is there anything that you particularly would like to see? No, I like to be open before I go, let it come to me as I go, not to have any sort of preconceived expectations.

Which is more interesting or valuable to you, art in a gallery or art on a street corner? On the one hand, if it’s up in a gallery, even though it gets various interpretations, including praise which may not exactly be warranted, in general the quality will probably be higher in a gallery than it will be on a street corner, just because it does have to go through a certain process. Certainly that doesn’t mean that everything there will be good or that everything on a street corner will not, but I suppose I would tend to lean toward the gallery, although again, it’s always interesting to find something new that hasn’t been praised and deserves to.

Name: Michael Rank

Occupation: Waiter

Residence: Buffalo

Do you know what the Infringement Festival is?Is it that film festival? No, I don’t actually. Sorry.

If you could do anything at the Infringement Festival, what would you do? This is hard. I mean, fish tanks are the only style of art I do. I set up fish tanks with live plants. That’d probably the closest artist talent I have.

Which is more interesting or valuable to you, art in a gallery or art on a street corner? Oh, I love art on the street corner. Live music, especially. I’m more of a people person. I like knowing the person who did it, getting to know them, talking to them and seeing their viewpoints.

Name: Karen Rayer

Occupation: Nurse

Residence: Hamburg

Do you know what the Infringement Festival is? I have no idea.

If you could do anything at the Infringement Festival, what would you do? Paint. I’d like to paint, just the scenery of people walking around the city.

Which is more interesting or valuable to you, art in a gallery or art on a street corner? The art by the artist, so I can see what they are doing as well as how it’s done.
