Season 2: Eclectic Boogaloo

Everyone needs a good laugh to keep balanced, so in the interests of preserving your good-nature check out Season 2: Eclectic Boogaloo, a comedy performance by the Eclectic Improv Company this Saturday (Jan. 27) at Shea’s, 8pm. Todd Benzin, Peter Cumbo, Don Gervasi, John Kreuzer and Michael Hake use nothing but their wits and the audience’s ideas to create dialogues, short plays, songs, duets and more— and they do it all instantaneously with no time to prepare, so even if you see every show they ever do you’ll never see the same show twice. The guys also make it a point to direct all teasing and insulting to each other and not towards the audience, so sit right in the front row and have a good time as this razor-witted group makes you laugh ‘til your sides hurt

Johnny Nobody

Instead of spending the winter months hibernating, rock n roll trio Johnny Nobody has split time touring the Northeast and recording their debut EP, titled Ill Will (HarvestSum), set for a release late winter/early spring. With a sound that draws influences from bands such as Sloan, Superdrag, early Radiohead and Led Zepplin, they will continue to tour in the coming months in support of their debut release. The group broke onto the Buffalo scene in 2001 while still in high school, and have a reputation for fun and energetic live shows, opening for the Zombies and Sloan at this past year’s Thursday at The Square. Catch them live and indoors at the Mohawk Place on Saturday (Jan. 27) for a 10pm show. Also on the bill are fellow Harvest Sum bands the Old Sweethearts and Vera Lena

End of the World Party

As the world seems to be warming up and melting down, it’s time for the “End of the World Party” at the Golden Key Tavern on Connecticut St., Saturday (Jan. 27), starting at 9pm sharp. Emceed by the appropriately stage-named character Uncle Mel(ty) Iceberg, the show features favorite rock bands Bad Ronald (pictured), the Ball Cheese Psychotics, the Clean Cut Kids, the Painkillers and special guests the Clockers, making this a perfect pre-apocalyptic line up.

Blizzard Weekend

It’s “Blizzard Weekend” (Jan. 27-28) at the Buffalo Museum of Science, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the crushing winter storm known infamously as the “Blizzard of ‘77.” In conjunction with the museum’s ongoing exhibition, Snow, the two-day event will feature interactive activities for all ages, live music, storytelling, craft-making amd more, with a special visit by Channel 2 meterologist Andy Parker. An in-depth presentation on Sunday, January 28 (the exact day the storm hit 30 years ago) begins at 2pm with a program of remembrances, true blizzard tales, archival footage and talks and discussion with storm experts including Erno Rossi (author 0f White Death: The Bilzzard of ‘77) and Tom Noziol of the US Weather Service. All programs are free with museum admission.

Zs

In the numbers world, math begins with simple calculation and ends at highly abstract “pure mathematics.” In the world of “math rock,” a genre defined by disjointed rhythms, angular riffs and dissonant chord structures, the “pure math” would be the Brooklyn-based brutal-prog band Zs. Spitting fragments of oblique harmony into pieces that draw from both avant-garde compositional techniques and prog rock dexterity, Zs has played on bills with bands like Animal Collective and Gang Gang Dance, as well as with modern composers Christian Wolff and Louis Andriessen. Equal parts rock band and chamber ensemble, the group pursues highly original abstractions that transcend both arenas. Check them out at Soundlab on Monday (Jan. 29), at 9pm
