BABETTE’S FEAST—Director Gabriel Axel’s moving adaptation of a story by Isak Dinesen was the winner of the 1988 Academy Award for best foreign language film. In a Danish fishing village in 1871, a French cook (Stephane Audran) who has been forced to flee her homeland, becomes a housemaid to two elderly sisters, daughters of a pastor who frowned on the pleasures of the flesh. After 14 years of service in this austere household, Babette wins the lottery and uses the money to prepare a lavish French feast for a dinner in memory of the late pastor. Thu Nov. 1. KILLER OF SHEEP (1977)—Charles Burnett’s independently made movie about the life of a struggling black family in Watts.
