Letters to Artvoice

SAME PEACE BRIDGE,

DIFFERENT PLACE

Short and sweet: The “new bridge” design is beautiful. However, it make no architectural sense to place it next to the origional as there’s clearly a conflict of style.

Why not utilize the International Railroad location for this second bridge…having the origional bridge utilized only for automobile/tourism…the new for “truck” traffic?

Seems like a “no brainer”…less confusion separating the two…no more obnoxious truck traffic at the present location…no disruption of a strong, rooted neighborhood which carries a part of Buffalo’s history!

two Letters from George, Whose Garden on jefferson We Have Never Featured in this Newspaper

October 12:

BOO to da Artvoice!

Yet again the scalawags and white liberal carpetbaggers at the Artvoice highlight the “works of art” of white liberal newcomers (“Boarded Up Can Be Beautiful,” Artvoice v6n41) while IGNORING what the BLACK denizens of the eastside who have been living here over a couple of decades have been doing or have been trying to do!

BOO TO DA ARTVOICE! BOO TO CARPETBUGGERY! BOO!!!!

November 4:

I’m sure Mr. Pamuk is an interesting and important person being Nobel laureate and everything, but why exactly did the Artvoice give a whole thing to what HE thinks about how to promote cross-cultural understanding by talking to each other (“Talk to Each Other,” Artvoice v6n44)? Americans of all kinda creeds, colors and social standing were taught that by their parents and kindergarten teachers. Maybe the whole thing would have been more interesting if you just sent some reporters around with pens and paper talking to different cultural peoples in da neighborhoods and then wrote about it. Mr. Pamuk could even come along to make the whole thing more Nobel laureate-ish. In any case you guys gotta get a BOO! for keeping it corporate instead of keeping it real. Actually you gotta get DOUBLE BOOS!

BOO! BOO!

How anybody suppose to take “cross-cultural understanding” by “talking to each other” seriously when you have not printed ANY letters to the editor about ANYTHING for TWO issues.

ALERT LOVERS OF DEMOCRACY AND FREE SPEECH! PHONY BALONYNESS AND LIBERAL ELITE CARPETBUGGERY AND OTHER SUNDRY SKULLDUGGERY AT THE “ALTERNATIVE” ARTVOICE! BOO TO PHONY BALONYNESS! BOO!

Sincerely,

George Winfield

MIERS VS. SWEENEY

In the recent past, there were two music reviews that I found quite interesting. One appeared in Artvoice and the other in the Buffalo News. In both instances, the reviewers (Jeff Miers and Joe Sweeney) came off as less than fans of the music they were reviewing. That is were the similarities ended. Jeff Miers reviewed the new Britney Spears CD and while it was obvious this is not his kind of music, I thought the review was very fair and evenhanded. He covered her current personal status and the state of her music and in the end admitted that fans of her music would probably enjoy her latest work. Joe Sweeney chose to review the latest work from James Blunt (“Left of the Dial,” Artvoice v6n44). From the start of the review, it was obvious that Joe’s only agenda was to perform a hatchet job on a performer and a genre that he disdains. If I were a fan of Mr. Blunt and wanted to know if I would like this CD or not, I would have no clue after reading this review. It is my opinion that music reviewers should be as objective as possible and try to leave their own personal likes and dislikes out of their work. If Mr. Sweeney cannot do this, then maybe he should stick to reviewing only music that conforms to his personal musical taste.
