DIVINE INTERVENTION (2002)—Elias Suleiman’s exquisite comedy is an absurdist look at daily life in modern Nazareth, where an Israeli checkpoint is an inescapable fact of life. It might well have won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film but for the fact that the people refused to accept its submission—they don’t consider Palestine a country.
