Gore Gore Girls |
Friday (Nov. 30) at the Mohawk Place will be a night full of beer drinkers and hell raisers as three high voltage rock and roll bands perform together. Detroit’s Gore Gore Girls are a garage rock record collector’s dream, referencing Bo Diddley, the Ronettes, the Saints and the Stooges. Named after the 1972 classic grindhouse film by Herschell Gordon Lewis, these four women have reached a level of rock-n-roll respectability that’s seen them sharing stages with the Stooges, the MC5 and the Zombies. Also on the bill are Cleveland’s Whiskey Daredevils, who intertwine AC/DC and ZZ Top with Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. Featuring former members of the legendary Cowslingers, the Daredevils are a staple in Buffalo. Opening the show is the Found, one of the best young bands on the scene. |

Rock for Food |
The Sixth Annual “Rock For Food” hits Club Infinity on Friday (Nov. 30) with a line-up of local all-stars. The fundraiser and food drive is spearheaded by Buffalo musician Scott Celani, to benefit the Food Bank of WNY during the especially needy Holiday season. Besides the Scott Celani Band, the event features the best in regional original music performing live on two stages. McCarthyizm, Here Come the Comets, Tom Stahl & the Dangerfields, Floozie, Lenny Revell, Off the Cuff, Vince De Rosa, From These Eyes, Rob Falgiano, Dee Adams and Jack Prbylski will all be there to do their part ( and many of these names will pop up at Club Infinity again later in the week, at Nightlife’s 2007 Buffalo Music Awards on Thursday, Nov. 6). “Rock For Food” starts off at 8pm, and a donation of a non-perishable food item will get a dollar off the ticket price. |

Elisabeth Von Trapp |
Elisabeth Von Trapp, granddaughter of the legendary Baron and Maria Von Trapp of Sound of Music fame, has been furthering the family singing tradition since childhood, enthralling audiences just as her forbears did. Elisabeth has created an artistic style all her own, drawing comparisons to ethereal vocalists like Judy Collins and Loreena McKennitt with a repertoire that ranges from classical to contemporary (“Bach to Broadway…Schubert to Sting.”) She’ll be performing a Cathedral program at Westminster Church on Sunday (Dec. 2) consisting of sacred and secular music extending from Gregorian chants to early American hymns, spirituals, and psalms set to her own unique guitar compositions. “Elisabeth Von Trapp: A Von Trapp Christmas” begins at 4pm. $10 suggested donation |

"Off the Beaten Path" Tour |
ForgottenBuffalo.com presents the original “Off the Beaten Path” Tour on Thursday (Dec. 6), from 6-10pm. A whirlwind of unique landmarks, classic taverns, old world neighborhoods and Nickel City oddities, this unforgettable event includes a home cooked meal, libations at a pre-prohibition tavern, entertainment by a polka-singing bartender and much more. With television personality Maxwell Truth as the guide, this is sure to be a Buffalo adventure the likes of which ain’t been seen in years. Explore the historic Polonia district, identify the “Most Endangered Landmarks of 2007” and visit sites of former haunts like the old Nawrocki’s (pictured above, circa 1960). The four-hour jaunt costs $35 and provides dinner, bus transportation and the tour. Space is way limited, e-mail ForgottenBuffalo@aol.com to reserve a seat. Ages 21+ only. |

The King Khan & BBQ Show |
The King Khan & BBQ Show has simply got to be seen to be believed. A two headed beast of a band, they have received international acclaim for their nasty fuzz-drenched sound and stage show. One plays guitar and drums (with his feet) while the other wails away on guitar and vocals, creating a sound that could incite an entire audience to either dance or riot. The music may bring to mind the 13th Floor Elevators, the Velvet Underground or the Sonics when they were at their peaks, but there’s so much more to it, with a great influence of classic soul as well. Whatever happens, it will not be predictable or boring. King Khan & BBQ perform at Mohawk Place on Thursday (Dec. 6th) with Plates, the Thermidors and the Snot Rockets. |

JP Losman is sacked. AV correspondent Dave Staba reports…posted December 2, 11:16 am on Artvoice DailyJP Losman is sacked. AV correspondent Dave Staba reports on Sunday’s loss from the cheap seats at Ralph Wilson Stadium: Trent Edwards rolled to his right. And he rolled to his right. And then he rolled some more. Finally, a moment before he would have run completely off the field, Buffalo’s quarterback flung the ball towards his intended receiver, who was evidently sitting in a third-row seat near the southerly corner at the tunnel end of Ralph Wilson Stadium... Highlighted in yellow are city employees who report to the mayor or their relatives; highlighted in pink are other city employees. On the Waterfrontposted November 26, 2:00 pm on Artvoice DailySo you think Buffalo has a hard time figuring out what to do with its waterfront, do ya? Mad that we can’t just build a signature bridge, huh? Madder still that we can’t just knock the Skyway bridge down? Furious with obstructionists who don’t want a Bass Pro Shop? Livid about the ice boom? And don’t even get you started about all the blind, misguided fools who can’t see that a huge casino downtown will turn our city around? Yes, my friend, you do in fact have all the answers... (more) |

Another Voiceposted November 26, 10:11 am on Artvoice DailyHere’s something that drives me crazy about the Buffalo News: the “Another Voice” column on the editorial page. It would be a nice idea, except that so often it is not given over to “another” voice. It is given, rather, to the same old voices: to people who are frequently quoted as sources in articles, who are in positions of political or economic power, to folks whose job is to push agendas—to people, in other words, who have no difficulty making their voices heard... Paint the Townposted November 14, 11:06 am on Artvoice DailyLate last night, at the tail end of one of the few weeks in the past year in which we did not publish anything snarky about anybody, someone threw two gallons of paint on our front doors.
