GLORYTELLERS (featuring Geoff Farina)
|
In many circles, Geoff Farina is seen as a pioneer. As leader of the esteemed Karate, Farina used jazz as a template to become one of the most influential indie rock bands of the last 20 years. When Karate disbanded Farina embarked on a solo career that balanced between the sound of his former band and the quiet folk of his enigmatic side project Secret Stars. With Glorytellers (which also features members of Him, Cul De Sac and Mice Parade) Farina moves into a quieter realm of innovative jazz invoking strong rustic Americana imagery. With influences as diverse as Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard, Jelly Roll Morton, Minutemen and Pere Ubu, the songs on Glorytellers’ debut may be difficult for the average listener to come to grasp with on the first few listens. However, it is with each repeated listen that the songs’ strengths begin to shine, making this one of the best albums to come out of 2008 so far. Opening are Patrons of Sweet and A Hotel Nourishing. This is a rare appearance for Farina in Buffalo, as he hasn’t been here since Karate performed over a decade ago.
