Good Night, McBride's

McBride’s, the creaky old tavern at the corner of Chicago and Miami Streets, was demolished last Monday morning, while the rest of the city dug out from under the weekend’s snow. The brick building had lost its roof in an early January storm, then was left open to the elements by its owner for two weeks, weakening the structure. A second storm at the end of the month caused a third-floor wall to collapse.



More McKinley High School Allegations

On March 4, 2008, Ralph Hernandez, Vice President of Executive Affairs for the Buffalo Board of Education, sent a letter to State Commissioner of Education Richard P. Mills requesting an inquiry into serious allegations of wrongdoing at McKinley High School leveled by a former teacher at the school who retired last year and wished to keep her identity anonymous for fear of reprisal against relatives still working in the district.

Blair Horner wants to turn a little light on the legislative process in Albany. And he’s succeed, creating Project Sunlight, a Web site (sunlightny.com) that hosts searchable databases containing infomration on lobbyists, campaign contributions, state contracts and legislation.

A man was surprised when he returned to his vehicle on Sunday afternoon to find it empty. The victim, whose Jeep Cherokee was parked downtown at Mohawk and Franklin Streets, found his front passenger window smashed out, and noticed that more than $4,000 worth of goods had been removed from it. Yes, he left more than $4,000 worth of his personal possessions in plain view downtown. Among the stolen items were a satellite radio system, an iPod, clothing, a laptop, a bag, a GPS system and, mysteriously, golf clubs.



Follow That Story: Tabu, nee Blue Mirage

Last week we reported that Mayor Byron Brown had vetoed the issuing of a dance restaurant license to Blu Mirage on Main and Ellicott Streets. The veto was a reaction in small part to the owners’ operating outside their licenses and in large part to a brawl that took place there on February 10, a fight that took 30 police officers to contain.



A Guy in Buffalo Writes...

Republican political operative Roger Stone has been crowing over Spitzer’s humiliations on FOX News and saying he knew it was coming weeks in advance. He also warned coyly on Tuesday that more revelations would soon out.
