Vijay Iyer Quartet

The Hunt Real Estate Art of Jazz Series presents pianist Vijay Iyer leading a quartet with Rudresh Mahanthappa on alto saxaphone, Stephan Crump on bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums. They’ll be showcasing some songs from their upcoming album, Tragicomic, which is set to be released this coming spring. Iyer was voted both “Number One Rising Star Jazz Artist” and “Composer of the Year” in DownBeat magazine’s International Critics’ Poll for the past two years in a row, and has been consistently critically lauded for his live performances. His compositions draw from various African, Asian and European musical elements, firmly rooted in an American jazz tradition that’s been infuenced by his east Indian cultural heritage. Iyer was raised in the Rochester area, the son of Indian immigrants, and he went on to get a Ph.D. in music and cognitive science at the University of California/Berkeley before landing in New York City, where within five years he’d launched a stunning career. Iyer is leading a new generation of jazz musicians performing world tours, composing film scores and staging innovative large scale multimedia works as well. The quartet will begin its performance at 3pm, preceded by the Jeremy Siskind Trio with Dave Tedeschi and Jesse Brehenye at 2pm.
