Saving Sankofa

I read with interest a letter to Artvoice from Dr. Anthony Murphy concerning the Sankofa Charter School (Artvoice v7n16). In his letter Dr. Murphy asserts that I have had a long-term relationship with, and a financial interest in the school.



High Gas Prices: A Wedge Issue

If there was ever any doubt about the fact that America’s political and corporate leaders lack the courage to face up to the coming catastrophe of global warming, it has been removed by recent events. While campaigning in Indiana, Hillary Clinton joined John McCain in calling for a suspension of the federal gasoline tax in order to lower the price at the pump, which is rapidly approaching the $4 per gallon level. If there is any issue that is sure to unite Republicans and Democrats, it is the supposedly inalienable right of the public to cheap gas, no matter how much we consume and no matter how little we produce.



Bring Back Laid-Off Teachers

Although many teachers were ecstatic on Friday, April 24, after the Appellate Division of the State Supreme Court rendered an affirmative decision on the health insurance carrier dispute with the district, it was a somber occasion for others when the court vacated the ruling by both the arbitrator and a previous State Supreme Court to reinstate laid-off teachers with back pay and interest.
