Lemuria

On Friday (Jan. 11), three year old powerpop/punk group Lemuria will celebrate the release of their new CD, Get Better (Asian Man), with an album release party at Mohawk Place. It’s an all local-band show with special guests the Exit Strategy, whose new album City of Microphones is due for release next month, and Having Eyes. Lemuria is recently back from a five week tour of Europe, where the German label Yo Yo Records has put together a compilation CD comprising nearly everything the band has put out so far. Get Better will be available at Friday’s show for $8, the LP version for $9. What’s more, the first fifty people to buy the album will get a free screen printed poster as a bonus. The show starts at 8pm.

Crazy Monster Show

The Adam Mickiewicz Dramatic Circle (also known as “Mickie’s” or the Polish Library, and home to Torn Space Theater) will be hosting the “Crazy Monster Show” on Friday (Jan. 11), starting at 9pm. Bands performing include veteran goth-punkers the Rabies, psych-metal/grunge band Trystero and the mostly indescribable GreggreG2000, who might be solo or might not, but will nevertheless incorporate numerous personalities. Whether you come for the monsters, the music, the drama or the weirdness, if you can find the building you’re in for some crazy fun. (It’s located at 612 Fillmore Ave., right off Broadway.) Cost is $5 at the door.

Jennifer O'Connor

Brooklyn based singer/sonwriter Jennifer O’Connor comes to Soundlab on Saturday (Jan. 12), for a show at 9pm. She’s an addition to Matador Records, which produced her 2006 album Over The Mountain, Across The Valley And Back To The Stars. Her third full-length recording, Over the Mountain has the freshness of a debut, acclaimed by The Village Voice as “one of the best albums of the year.” The Voice also compared her to Elliott Smith and Liz Phair, though without the “primping, preening” of Phair or the “sad-sack whining” of Smith. Citing varied influences like Aimee Mann, Destroyer, Dylan, Petty, Jay-Z and Kanye, O’Connor maintains an unusual and unique appeal. Jax Deluca opens the show.

Mir Ali

Shakti Yoga, located at 220 Lexington Ave. (between Elmwood and Ashland) is hosting a live music series called Shakti Lounge in addition to the daily yoga classes it offers. The series continues on Saturday (Jan. 12) at 8pm with guitar virtuoso Mir Ali, accompanied by David Phillips on percussion. Dance to Rumba, Flamenco and Tango, or simply sit back and soak up the relaxing environmment. “Shakri” translates from Indian Sanskrit to “energy force toward consciousness,” and these performances provide a way to experience live music in a spiritual way. Tickets are $10 at the door (884-YOGA/www.shaktibuffalo.com)
