Promoting Healthy Lifestyles, Social Networking

Changing Lives

In the summer of 2007, AIDS Community Services of Western New York Department of Prevention and Education convened a meeting with a small group of LGBT people who came together to address the lack of healthy social networking events for the LGBT community in Buffalo. The group named itself Life Changes and met at the Pride Center. It has grown to more than 60 members dedicated to creating positive, healthy events for area LGBT people.

Life Changes members come from all walks of life. There are students, professionals, and representatives from other local LGBT organizations. What brings them together is a genuine concern for LGBT issues and a commitment to raising awareness about HIV within our community. It is a great place to voice concerns, share information, meet new people, and have a slice of pizza with friends. While HIV effects every community, inequality in healthcare and prevention education are still major factors in rising rates among the LGBT community, especially communities of color within it. Programs like Life Changes have an impact on our community by providing education along with alternatives to high-risk behaviors. This innovative new program has allowed peers to educated one another beyond the program and effect change within their own communities from the ground up.

Life Changes meets twice a month from 5:30-6:30pm at the Pride Center (18 Trinity Place) in the Community Room. While it may sound like just another social group, AIDS Community Services’ staff have found it to be an effective way to raise awareness about HIV prevention and testing in a non-judgmental atmosphere. Since its inception, Life Changes members have participated in the 2007 AIDS Walk, LGBT outreach events, and even a scavenger hunt. Upcoming events include the 2008 AIDS Walk (May 31), a community barbecue, outreach at Buffalo’s great summer events, and even a safe-sex themed ball.
